Jaela
Rock and roll and faded blue jeans And standing on the edge of

~I walked in and two silver bells chimed against the door. From a
back room I heard two women fighting, one must have been in her
sixties and the other seemed a little older than me, maybe in her
twenties.
“You know what?! Fine! You’re fired!” the older
woman shouted
“You can’t do that! You’ll never find anyone to
take my place!” the younger woman shouted, running out of
the back room, pushing past me, and running out of the
store.
The older woman stepped out of the back room, straightened her
skirt, and seemed to be mumbling something under her breath. She
had long silver hair, pulled into a half ponytail, and bright
blue eyes. She was rocking the hippie look, and I secretly wished
to be just like her one day.
“The girls of your generation need to learn respect.”
She finally said. “My name is Gladys, pronounced like
Glad-ess, but everyone around here calls me
Glady.”
“Hi!” I said, sticking out my hand for her to shake,
which she gladly took, pun intended. “My name’s
Jaela”
“Well, Jaela, you look a bit familiar… are you from
around here?”
“No, but I’m staying with my aunt Henley for the
summer, she lives just a few streets over.”
“Of course it’s you! I should have known,
you’re the spitting image of Henley. That is amazing. Are
you in search of a job? I just had one open up.” She said
nodding at the door, referring to the girl who I just saw run
out.
“Yes, absolutely! My parents want me to get a job this summer and judging by the looks of this place I’d love a job here.”
“Great! You can start Monday then. The store hours are Monday thru Friday 10-5; I shut down the store for an hour starting at noon, and eat lunch at your aunt’s bistro right up the street.”
After a few more minutes of chatting I took a stroll around the
store. I had no idea what I was looking for, but just so I had an
idea of what I was going to be selling. The place wasn’t
too big, I think it was mostly for repairing or reshaping surf
boards, but I’d definitely find out by the end of next
week. I said goodbye to Glady and left the shop.
As I stepped out of the door, I looked across the street at an ice cream shop, and began thinking about lunch. Before I could even begin thinking where I’d like to go, I found myself completely lost in the hazel eyes that were staring back at me.

~ “Brayson, you’re not late for
once!”
“Yeah, Greg, I know, I set an alarm this time.” I
said smirking.
Work seemed to fly by. I couldn’t stop thinking about that
girl from Henley’s place, she looked just like Henley, so
she must be a relative of Henley’s.
The bells on the door rang, and in walked
Aimee.
“The usual?” I said smirking.
“Yes, I just got another call from the captains and they
want us moved into our dorms by tomorrow morning. I need one more
ice cream before I leave, since they’ll probably ban that
from our diets until spring.”
“I thought they wanted you by the end of next week?”
I said handing her the usual cookie dough and caramel sauce. I
really like that we’re still talking, I mean like we used
to, before we dated.
“so did I, until the call this morning. Apparently one of
the senior girls got pregnant in the first two weeks of summer,
so they want to lessen the chances of losing more girls from the
squad for the same reason.”
“well, I’ll see you around I guess?”
“yeah definitely, Bray, you’re awesome, you know
that?”
“of course. Now please go pack, because knowing you
you’ll wait til tomorrow morning and be mad that you
did.”
“you’re right! See ya!” with that, she
left.
One o’clock
seemed to come faster than normal, but I didn’t mind, more
time for surfing. During the afternoons in the summer, surfing is
like my life. It’s an escape for me from everything.
Pete and I made a pact that we wouldn’t take our stresses
out on drugs or drinking and that we’d just surf. Neither
of us has broken the pact yet and, given we’re juniors-soon
to be seniors-in high school, that’s pretty impressive
I left the shop completely in the surfing mind set. Today I
really had to go and buy more wax, and I really had to get my
landing down if I wanted to win anything in the Labor Day
competition.
Wait wait wait. There she is again! Oh, those blue eyes could
kill a guy.
