The Right Way #43
"What?" I asked, bewildered.
"Do you want to go to Mexico with
me for winter break?" he repeated.
I snapped out of it. "Yes, yes,
yes!" I jumped up and hugged him. "I can't believe
you want me to go!"
"Why wouldn't I?" Now he
was bewildered. I just shrugged, not sure how to answer.
"Shouldn't you ask your
parents?" He snapped me out of my reverie.
"They wouldn't care," I
said indifferently.
"Skye, come on. They are your
parents. They need to know." He turned towards me and put
his hands on my shoulders. "The sooner you call them, the
better."
I knew he was right. "Fine, fine.
I'll call them now." I whipped my cell phone out and
dialed my mom's cell. She answered on the 4th ring.
"Hey, mom?"
"Yes? What is it, Skye?" She
sounded annoyed.
"What are we doing for winter
break?"
"Just staying home, why?" Now
she was curious.
"Can I go to Mexico with Ryan and
his family? His sister is having her wedding there, and he wanted
me to go." Silence. "Mom?"
"No, honey. You can't
go."
"What, why?! Mom, this isn't
fair!"
"Skye, I am not letting you fly out
of the country, to MEXICO, of all places, without my supervision.
Do you know the situations going on down there?"
"Mom, I am going to be traveling
with the wedding party, of like 50 people. And we are staying at
a resort, so we wouldn't have any need to leave. Please, mom,
please. I have never been out of the country, and I have never
asked you for anything. Please, let me go." My throat was
starting to hurt, which happened before I started to cry. I tried
holding it in, though, because crying wouldn't help
anyone.
"Let me talk it over with your
father," she replied.
"He is NOT my dad. He is your
husband, nothing to me. Nothing." I hung up on her, tears
brimming at my eyes. I turned to Ryan. "She isn't going
to let me go with you."
He wrapped his arms around me.
"Just give her some time. She'll warm up to the
idea." I just shook my head, and he tightened his arms
around me. We stayed like that for a while, but then we left his
dorm. We started to walk around the campus, when my phone began
to ring. My mom.
"Hello?" I asked bitterly.
"You can go to Mexico," she
began. I looked excitedly at Ryan. "But we are coming
with."
What?!
