What If I Love You??
(64)
When the sun started going down I picked up my stuff and headed
back into the house. I smelled barbeque, so I put my shorts back
on, my hair back up, and my phone in my pocket and walked out into
the yard. Chris had the grill going, with a bunch of wooden skewers
next to the grill and meat cooking in long strips, and there was
slices of peaches on a plate next to the grill.
“Whatcha making?”
“Exactly what you asked for,” he told me. He wiped his
greasy hands on his apron and walked over and hugged me.
“You’re tan,” he commented.
“I hope so! I just sat on the beach for like three hours.
What were you doing?”
“Playing Black Ops with the neighbors. There’s five
guys over there from North Carolina and they brought their xbox and
stuff.”
“Ooh, nice! You should teach me how to play that.”
“I will.”
Chris and I had a video game obsession. He would buy the games and
then teach me how to play and help me get better because, like a
lot of girls, I really hard-core sucked at video games when I first
started them. Chris went back to the food. He took the meat off the
grill, cut it into edible squares, and pushed the pieces onto the
skewers along with peach chunks. He handed me a skewer.
Dinner was amazing, as it always was when Chris cooked. We washed
the skewers and plates off and put them away in the cupboard.
Chris’s phone buzzed and he looked at the screen and then
flipped it open.
“Hey.”
“Hey, whatchu up to?” I heard a guy’s voice.
“We just had dinner.”
“Hey, why don’t you come over and play some Black Ops
with us?”
“Can my girlfriend come?”
“Sure. What’s her name?”
“Scarlett.”
“Cool. See you in a few.”
“Yup, bye.” Chris turned to me. “Come on Scar,
we’re going to play Black Ops with the North
Carolinians.”
“Ooh, really?”
“Yup.”
We walked over, and a tall brown hair guy met us at the door.
“Hey, come on in you guys. Brett, Michael, Nick and Ken are
actually playing right now, but just grab a seat and someone will
hand you a controller in a few.” And then to the guys:
“Hey, Chris is back and his girlfriend is with
him!”
I heard a lot of mumbling and then the guy turned back to me.
“It’s Jake, by the way.”
“Scarlett.”
“Nice. Do you guys want anything? There’s stuff in the
fridge, help yourself.”
He grabbed a Sprite and flopped down on one of the three couches.
Chris got a root beer and we sat down on a couch and passed it
between us. In a bit the round was over.
“Hey, you want this?” Nick held the controller out to
me. I took it and smiled.
“Thanks.”
Chris helped me pick out my gun, and soon enough I was
running around getting the hang of the game with the guys. I saw
Chris flip his phone open. One of the guys had texted him,
“Helluva girlfriend,” and he texted back, “I
know.”
I smiled and shot a few guys.
