I always wondered why"W" is called double U when

well sometimes i make mine look like a double u

In french, we say double v

not if its not a capital w, when i write it it is double u.

in spanish, its doble ve, which means double v

because in the Middle Ages, there weren't as much letters as now, but when people started to write in other languages than Latin, they had to have more letters, because there where more sounds in our language. that's why they used the u for v sound, and they used 2u's, "double u" for the w sound
