- New Girl Chapter Five It’s been three days since the phone call with my father, and I still couldn’t believe the news. He was engaged to Lizzy. They were going to have the wedding over the summer so that I could come to it. I didn’t even want to go, though. No matter what happens, I will never be able to think that my dad is better off with Lizzy than he was with my mom. Him and my mom hadn’t even been divorced for an entire year yet, either! But then, none of us know how long he’s really been with Lizzy. It could’ve been months before the divorce. At least it’s Saturday, now, and that means the movie with Ben and his friends. I showered and straightened my naturally wavy brown tendrils. I made a deep part and left my hair down. I pulled on a hot pink cami and put a long, loose black tank top on over top of it. Then I pulled on a new pair of dark jean shorts. To complete the outfit I added a long black necklace with matching earrings and a pair of black flats with buckles across the toe. I finished my makeup just as Ben knocked on my door. I grabbed my purse before I hurried to get the door before my mom did. “Hey,” I smiled at him. “I’m leaving,” I called inside to my mom and then closed the door, rushing Ben off the porch. Ben laughed at me. “What’s the hurry?” he asked. “Well, if you want to get stuck talking to my mom for the next hour, you can go back,” I retorted. “So what movie are we going to see?” I asked to change the subject. We walked back to Ben’s house and waited to be picked up. His friends were a few minutes late. When they pulled up, Ben and I walked out to the car. He opened the door for me. There was a girl already in the backseat. She smiled at me when I slide into the middle seat next to her. “Hi, I’m Brittney,” she said. “I’m Jennifer,” I smiled back. “That’s Leah,” she told me as she pointed to the girl in the passenger seat. “And that’s Cody.” She pointed to the guy in the driver’s seat. I realized that the two girls were the ones I’d seen with Ben that first day at the BP – Leah had been the one smoking – but I’d never seen the guy, Cody, before. He looked at me in the rearview mirror and our eyes caught. Suddenly I was blushing for no apparent reason. “Hey,” he said. “Hi,” I said shyly, averting my eyes, which were the most gorgeous green eyes I’d ever seen. Now, more than ever, I hoped Ben knew that I had only come with him as friends. AN: Alright, since I had it typed up, I decided to add this chapter right away. - New Girl Chapter Six Ben slid into the seat beside me and closed the door. “So, Jennifer, where are you from?” Brittney asked, sweetly. I started to like her already. She had short, dark brown hair that was spiky in the back. She was wearing white shorts and a bright blue tee shirt with a loose lacy white vest over top. Seeing that, I relaxed, knowing that I wasn’t going to be underdressed for the occasion. The drive took about half an hour. The conversation was dominated mostly by Ben and Brittney, although they both made an obvious effort to make me feel comfortable. Cody said some too, but I don’t think Leah said one thing the entire drive. When we got there, Cody stepped into line next to me. We all talked while we waited. When it was my turn, I opened my purse to get my wallet, but then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I glanced up in surprise as Cody told the clerk that he wanted two tickets to the movie we were saying. Everyone else had already gotten their tickets, so there was no mistaking who he was buying the ticket for. “You don’t have to,” I told him under my breath, but he just smiled at me as he handed her the money. As we walked over to where the others were waiting, leave gave me a dirty look. “You guys getting anything to eat?” Ben asked, oblivious. I shook my head no, but Cody and Leah walked over to the snack counter. “Want to share some popcorn?” Ben asked me, pulling out his wallet. “Sure,” I said softly. “C’mon,” he said, and I followed him to the end of the line. After we got the popcorn, we all headed into the theatre to get our seats. The movie was good. Afterwards, we went to Pizza Hut. We all chipped in for it, and we had a good time. Even Leah loosened up after awhile. I couldn’t help but notice that she kept touching Cody’s chest and arms. Every time she did, and he didn’t stop her, I felt a tiny stab of rejection, although I’m not sure why. After all, I just met him. By the time we finished at Pizza Hut, it was a little after eight. Cody suggested that we go hang out at his house. “I don’t know,” Ben said hesitantly. “It’s getting pretty late,” he glanced at me. “I’m up for it,” I decided. Cody smiled at me. “Me too,” Leah said, putting her hand on Cody’s arm. He didn’t move it away, but he didn’t give her the smile that he gave me, either. I bit my lip. “I should probably get going,” Brittney said. Ben slid out his cell phone and typed something. He should it to Brittney, and they shared a look. “I guess I can come for a little bit,” Ben said, sliding his phone back into his pocket. Brittney shot me a look – what was it? Sympathy? "Kelsey?" I called. She wasn't quite awake yet. Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside. I did, for a few hours. One of the doctors finally came out saying, "I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?" "Yes," I whispered. He bit his lip. "She woke up, she's fine, but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss." "Are you serious?" I almost shouted. "I'm afraid so." I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't. I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again. "You can go see her if you want, but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom." I walked in, trembling in horror. I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept. I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again. I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out. Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered, "I don't know you, but I like your eyes."
