Fly Me To The Moon ...

-----CHAPTER 16-----
--Smirks and Prison---
-----TWELVE YEARS
AGO-----
Or, rather,
sometimes…sometimes that is all one can
do.
"Who's Hope, again?" I honestly haven't met
and couldn't remember half of Tracy's friends. "Is
she the nice, pretty dark-haired super-tanned one in Mary's
grade?"
"Yeah," Tracy answered. "Speaking of which, I
think your friends Mary,
Yana, Timmy, and what's-his-name…uhh…oh yeah!
Scott! I think they might be coming, too."
"Oh, nice!" A party really didn't seem like such
a bad idea at all. Then I frowned. A
party…fun…never in a million
years would my abusive stepdad allow me to
indulge myself in such a luxury under his authority.
"Wait, what's today's date?"
"Errm…nineteenth, I think."
My face lit up. My mom was coming back on the twenty-second!
That was just this Friday! "Yeah, I think I can
come!"
Tracy beamed. "Great! We'll get ready and pimped up
for the party before we leave though, haha. I will make you so
freakking stunning that when Landon sees the pictures on
Facebook, he'll wish he was
there!"
I got a stomach-wrenching feeling deep inside…
Yeah, I thought.
He'll wish he was there. For
you.
Suddenly I heard a screech of excitement from around the
corner.
My head flicked instantly towards it, like a bloodhound
that's caught a scent.
I think I've found what I've been hunting
for. Or rather, hoping for.
I only made out a handful or words.
But they were enough to send
me running into their
direction.
I ran from Tracy without excusing myself and bolted straight
into the middle of someone's conversation. It's okay. I
didn't recognize them anyway. Maybe, if I was real lucky,
they weren't even in my grade.
"Sorry…I uh…heard your conversation. What
did you say about Ciggs?" I felt a small smile creep up
onto my face. This was great! Maybe now things would be easier
for Mary and Scott! Maybe now they'd be fine! Maybe
they'd forgive me for lecturing them about drugs. But I
only lectured because I was worried…
I-I was really worried.
"He's behind bars." A good-natured voice. But a
feared voice, one that stung me. And just as easily as
it came, my smile disappeared, melted off my face.
I turned around.
Jayden Thorne.
I pursed my lips. Then I smiled again; I wondered how weird I
must seem to his friends. "That's great!" I
laughed, and ran away; face burning, hoping to leave before
they could recognize me, and before Jayden could make any real
eye contact with me.
Oh—too late! We locked eyes and
his lips spread across his face.
I almost jumped back, startled. That wasn't a
smile…that was one serious
smirk--almost proud.
I narrowed my eyes, and smirked right back.
I can do this.
I won't let this kid I hardly know scare the crap outta me
every time I see him!
But still, I found myself walking real fast
once I got past him.
