- Twenty Questions Chapter 4 (sorry if the last chapter confused you guys! hopefully this one clears it up!) part one I woke with a start. My forehead was prickled with sweat. And my throat was dry. Oh. My. God. Was I starting to remember? I stood up and began pacing around the room so I could think. Maybe, but…if that really happened then, what went on between then, and me ‘waking up’ in that warehouse with Carter. Carter! Oh my God! Carter was the boy on the bus. Unless it was just a dream. But no… It couldn’t be. He came on the bus as if he were looking for me… It didn’t make sense. Why was he there at that time… Maybe…maybe Carter was the reason the bus lost control. “No, no, no.” I said to out loud, forcing the thought out of my mind. It couldn’t be real. I don’t even know if it’s a memory or a dream for crying out loud! Besides, Carter wouldn’t do that. He couldn’t, he’s been nothing but nice to me and- I heard a rustling from the floor behind me. It made me jump. “Did you say something?” Carter asked sleepily. “Oh…uhm, no. Sorry.” Oops…I forgot he was in here. I looked around the room again. When we had arrived last night I hadn’t been able to see that well. But now the sun was rising, and it was shining through the cracks in the three boarded up windows. There was a small closet in one corner, I’m guessing that’s where Carter pulled our sleeping bags out of last night. There was a light grey folding table pushed against one of the walls, right under one of the windows. There were also four matching chairs around it. There was an old, bulky refrigerator on the other side of the room, directly across from the table. It was making a slight humming sound that filled the room. Our two sleeping bags were in the center of the room. Carter was in a dark green one he was snoring a little bit. I realized that, aside from my ‘dream,’ this was really the first time that I actually looked at him. His hair was the perfect length- not too long and not too short. It was brown and shaggy, and I liked it. His skin was sun kissed. There was a dash of freckles sprinkled on and around his nose. He had muscles, a lot of them. Carter. Wow. He was hot. Just then, he shifted a little and rolled over. This brought me back to reality. Oh my God, I was being such a creep. I laughed at myself and how stupid I was. Then, my stomach growled. Carter looked so peaceful sleeping, and I didn't want to wake him up so I decided to check in the fridge for something to eat. I turned on my heel and took one step. - Twenty Questions Chapter 6 part one (the things in italics mean they are part of Carter's story) “So…what do you want to know?” he asked. “A lot.” I answered, “I don’t know where to start.” “Well, what do you remember?” Ricki asked, trying to help. “That’s the problem. I don’t really know. I guess you should start with how we met?” I suggested. “Hmm…It’s pretty complicated. Let’s see…” Carter paused, thinking. “What if you tell her everything like a story?” Ricki said. “Yea! That’s a good idea!” I replied. That way nothing would be left out. “Okay.” Carter said, “Just give me a minute.” Ricki smiled, obviously proud of her contribution. Carter got up and started pacing. “Okay…bear with me though, at first it might not seem to make sense.” He warned. “You have to know my story before you’ll be able to understand the rest.” I nodded, and Ricki looked intrigued. “So…Here it goes,” he started after a few minutes of thinking. “Three years ago, my family was living in Southern Colorado when my parents disappeared. Just all of a sudden- out of the blue. We came home from school one day, and they were just gone. People searched for them, lots of people did. The police, neighbors, friends, family- even strangers helped out. But they were never found. I was twelve at the time, and my sisters were four and seven. I also had an older brother- he was nineteen- so we were able to stay together and live with him while he was at school. But he had a drug problem, and one year after my parents went missing, he OD-ed. Our aunts and uncles all took us in. But nothing was permanent. We moved from relative to relative and never stayed in one place for more than two months. If it wasn't for me, wanting to play basketball with her, she wouldn't be going through this. It was already four days, and she hasn't woken up. On the fifth day, I saw her eyes gently open. "Kelsey?" I called. She wasn't quite awake yet. Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside. I did, for a few hours. One of the doctors finally came out saying, "I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?" "Yes," I whispered. He bit his lip. "She woke up, she's fine, but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss." "Are you serious?" I almost shouted. "I'm afraid so." I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't. I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again. "You can go see her if you want, but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom." I walked in, trembling in horror. I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept. I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again. I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out. Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered, "I don't know you, but I like your eyes."
