Immediately my ribs felt like fire was licking at my bones and I hissed through my teeth at the pain, lightly pushing myself away from him. He held onto me tighter, his silent warning for me not to get up, and I closed my eyes in pain as my ribs ached even further. I could only hope he hadn't broke them."Dean, my ribs," I said quietly and felt him let me go as I stood up and looked into the wall mirror that was on Dean's door. I felt two arms wrap around me gently, and Dean kissed my shoulder. "I love you," he said. "I love you too." It was automatic. I knew what would happen if I didn't say it back.My eyes flashed towards the jagged scar that was on my hairline, too faded for people to see unless they knew what they were looking for. "Go get ready, I'll make you something to eat okay?" he said and I knew I was safe. At least for today.After he beat me really bad, he was the Dean I fell in love with, apoligetic and sweet.Unless I did something to make him angry. I pulled a blue tank top over my head and slid my legs through skinny jeans with difficulty, trying not to make my ribs hurt.I ran a straighten iron through my light brown hair a few times, and left make up off.Dean hated when I wore it, unless it was just for him to see.I walked down the stairs like a zombie, my face blank. He smiled at me, noticing I hadn't put make up on, and pleased with that fact."Put on a coat when we leave," he said. No, he ordered. I nodded, sitting down and eating quickly, watching him from across the table wondering how he could ever turn into a monster like he did. With curls and bright green eyes, he looked harmless.I knew all too well he wasn't. We drove to school, his hand in mine, my favorite cd playing because he was trying to show me he was sorry and he loved me.We went our seperate ways to our homerooms, and he tightened his hand on my shoulder."You know I hate when you talk to guys..." he said in a low voice.I nodded, silently."I love you, Haden," he said, kissing me roughly. "Love you too."Walking down the hallway, that was now empty, I lifted my shirt once more, looking at the damage he'd done in bright light.I felt like throwing up.Suddenly someone threw me off balance by crashing into me, making me fall and my ribs hurt so bad the wind was knocked right out of me.From the weight that had thrown me, I knew it was a guy.Dean would hate that.I scrambled up, pulling my shirt down, my eyes wide."I'm sorry," I stuttered. The guy, with his head down and black hair falling into his face, brushed off his jeans. "Don't be. That was all me," he said, and when he lifted his face I bit my lip. He smiled.He was good looking. Really good looking.I looked away, suddenly nervous.I had thought the same thing about Dean when we had first met and now look at us. My ribs ached to remind me.I walked away quick, my head bowed, praying Dean wouldn't hear about this."Hey, wait up!" the guy called. Just let me wake up from this nightmare. I was on the floor in his room, curled into a ball. He had already kicked me numerous times, I was sure that my ribs were broken now. If the blinding pain that was coming from the side of my body was any sign.Dean leaned in close to my face, his face twisted in such rage he looked like a monster. "You told him didn't you? You told him!" he shouted so loudly I jumped."Told him what?" I asked him, my eyes wide. The guy who'd asked me my name smiled some more and I walked away before I caught his name. I hadn't said a word to him.Dean grabbed my wrists. He raised his fist, ready to hit me. I flinched. His jaw muscles clenched and unclenched. When I saw his fist coming down hard and fast, I shook my head. No. I ripped out of his grasp. "Stop."I'd never done this before. His eyes flared in fury and he punched me so hard my ears started to ring. I felt blood in my mouth. That's when I ran. I was panting by the time I got outside, my sneakers slapping against the pavement, my heart racing."You'll regret this!" he shouted after me, promise in his voice. A promise I knew he'd keep. But I couldn't worry about that now. I could only run and run and run.Car horns blared and I screamed, falling onto pavement and scratching my hands. I spit blood out of my mouth and some dribbled down my chin."Woah, oh my God. Oh my God." Someone was panicking. "I'm so sorry. I swear if I saw you I would've..." the guy trailed off when I looked up, and he squinted his eyes at me.I wiped the blood with my sleeve. "Haden?" It was the guy from earlier. Of course it was. I rubbed a hand over my face roughly and winced when I hit the bruise that Dean had made. "Sorry," I said to him and then swallowed, pushing myself to my feet. I gasped when the pain in my ribs was blinding. I bent over, sucking my cheeks in so I didn't start screaming."Haden? Hey... are you okay?""I'm fine," I spat out, harsher than I'd meant to.I stood up again, my hand covering my eyes as I tried to hide my tears.I was just so, so tired."Are you okay...""I'm really fine," I said, forcing a smile. "I have to go though." Where? Where would Dean not find me?"I'm Seth, by the way," he said and I stared at him, my head tilted slightly. It fit him. His dimples appeared.Seth offered me a ride home, his hands deep in his pockets, his crooked smile still on his face. It was almost comforting. Warm. Safe. I shook my head, wondering where that thought came from. I barely knew the guy.I swallowed. "Yeah, okay." And I climbed into his truck, one that had almost hit me, thinking it wouldn't have been so bad if it did.Hit me, I mean. I would never have to get beaten again. I wouldn't be trapped in something I couldn't get out of. "Kelsey?" I called. She wasn't quite awake yet. Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside. I did, for a few hours. One of the doctors finally came out saying, "I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?" "Yes," I whispered. He bit his lip. "She woke up, she's fine, but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss." "Are you serious?" I almost shouted. "I'm afraid so." I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't. I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again. "You can go see her if you want, but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom." I walked in, trembling in horror. I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept. I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again. I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out. Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered, "I don't know you, but I like your eyes."
