I looked up just then and saw Eleanor walking towards me.
“Hey, Rauri!” She said with a huge smile and a
hug.
“Hey, El. Is today a block day?:
“Yeah, I think so. Math is first.” She said, cheery
even about school.
“K, thanks. I’m gonna go get unpacked, save me a
seat!”
“Okay, I will. Bye!” I put my things in my locker,
which was decorated with sketches I had drawn. Art was my way
to get lost, the only thing that could really free me from
everything. I turned around and started walking towards my math
classroom and saw some 9th grade girls gawking at me with a
scared look on their faces. Those 9th graders, they really act
like the 10th graders are so much better than them and like
we’re so intimidating, even though we’re only a
grade above them. I continued on my way, dodging the people
whose voices have broken me, because hearing them again or
seeing the look on their faces triggers too much pain for me to
handle. “Just keep swimming,” is what El would say,
quoting her favorite kids movie, Finding Nemo.
Just as I was passing by the 11th grade lockers, I realized why
those girls were staring. They weren’t staring at me,
they were staring at the person behind me, Rey Thompson.
He’s a 6’5 junior, with a stocky frame and a thirst
for conflict, which would be quenched using my face. He slammed
me against the wall. “Why are you doing this!” I
screamed. He hit me with enough force to send me flying if I
wasn’t anchored to the lockers with his other arm. Tears
started streaming from my eyes, and a sick smile appeared on
his face.
“Why not?” He said, pushing me to the ground before
strolling away, acting like he ruled the world.
I squinted then shut my eyes, and let my head rest against the
locker. I licked my lips and tasted salt. Bleeding and crying,
and nobody noticed. Then I felt cool air as someone walked up
next to me. I saw a hand holding a tissue, and took it
gratefully. After I wiped my eyes, I raised my head and
instantly recognized who it was. Zander. “Rauri are you
ok?” He said gently, with more words than I had ever
heard him speak before.
“It’s happened before and it’ll happen
again.” I said, accepting the situation.
“But you. Are you okay? I saw it all happen and...”
He seemed to feel bad for not stepping in.
“I’m fine.” I lied. This was too much, this
has happened too many times. He gave a questioning look and I
fell into his arms. “I’m sorry, I’m just
overwhelmed.” He nodded and held tight to me, not
restraining his grip even when the bell rang. I was very
thankful for that. It was weird, relying on someone I
didn’t know well for support when I was weak. But five
years ago, and every sunday since, his family relied on
mine.
We finally released each other when we heard the familiar
clip-clop of the vice principal’s red high heels. She
always gets mad when people aren’t in class, and
she was coming from the direction I would be going to, so
Zander and I bolted. Why we were so afraid of seeing her, I
don’t know, but in that moment, we decided to run. We
went outside and sat on the bench there in silence for a few
minutes, then he stood up and started getting ready to walk
back inside. “Thank you,” I murmured. If he heard,
he didn’t say anything. We walked inside and saw Rey
standing right there in front of us.
