Fighting Hunger
Prologue
“C’mon Gabby, eat. Please, eat. You haven’t eaten in two days,” My best friend, Olivia, encouraged me. “Please...you need to-” Her voice cracked and she started crying.
I looked down in shame at the kitchen table, and saw a plate full of apple pie, my boney hand, and an empty fork next to it. Apple pie used to be my favorite, but not anymore. I looked at the dessert with a look of pure hatred on my face, but then I glanced at Olivia, who was sobbing now, and my expression softened. For Olivia, I thought. Just a few bites won’t hurt.
I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and muttered, “Here goes nothing.” And I scooped up a forkful of pie. I quickly brought it to my mouth before I could change my mind.
It was terrible, like a gooey mess of pure sickly sweetness in my mouth. It tasted like poison, just like everything I ate. I gagged, but forced myself to swallow it. I pushed the plate of pie away, and looked at Olivia.
“Happy?”
She shrugged, and wiped the tears out of her eyes with her hoodie’s sleeve, causing her eyeliner and mascara to smudge all over her cheeks. She looked ridiculous. I stifled my laughter, but then I couldn’t take it. I burst out laughing, and so did she.
Almost instantly, there was an unbearable pain in my stomach, like someone had stabbed me. I crossed my arms hoping it would go away. Then I could feel the pie in my stomach, churning around, threatening to make a reappearance.
Before Olivia could ask any questions, I sprinted down the hall, and into my bathroom. I slammed the door, not bothering to lock it, and rushed to the toilet. I threw up until there was nothing left except a dull ache in my gut. I collapsed next to the toilet and started crying. Eventually, Olivia came in and saw me. Her expression was just so sad. She came and sat next to me, and cradled my frail body in her arms until I fell asleep.
