An instrument is not required for a musical group to be classified as a band.
Besides, what else would you call them?
A group consisting of five singing boys?
'Cause band is a whole f/cking lot easier to say.

And there are other 'bands' that fall into your category of not being bands, e.g. don't play their own instruments, don't write their own songs- so why just mention 1D? No hate, I know you have your opinion- but as numerous people have mentioned in the comments below, why just single out 1D for it? :)

AAANNNDD these boys got discovered because of their voices. Their beautiful sweet sweet luscious voices. At least their not like some T-Pain acting b/tches who auto-tune the sh/t out of their voices. So I am quite okay with the fact that the only instrument they have is their voice.
