Something More
Than Friends

*Chapter Ten*

At that point, there was no stopping my tears from pouring from my eyes. I couldn’t believe it. The surgery worked. Josh remembered me. He remembered us. Slowly, he brought himself to sit up in his bed and pulled me close to him. Hugging each other tightly, neither of us wanted to let go. Josh was crying, too, something I hadn’t witnessed since a long time ago, when his grandfather passed away. “Bri, I could never forget you,” he reassured me. I smiled, and we released our grip from each other after a few minutes of hugging, crying, and smiling. Moments later, a doctor, named Dr. Finch, came into the room and read us our medical reports and statuses. He stated that I would be released from the hospital tonight, but Josh would need to stay for an extra week, due to his condition. Dr. Finch said they would need to monitor him for a couple of days to see how his brain is recovering. He would be taken to a rehab center on the third floor of the hospital for two hours each day. The purpose would be to ensure that all parts of his brain are working the way they should and all of his senses are still intact. Josh wasn’t too psyched about spending a whole other week stuck here in the hospital, but he didn’t protest or argue. After Dr. Finch walked out of our room, I looked into Josh’s eyes. “Josh, you saved me in that accident. You risked your own life for me. I can’t ever thank you enough for that.” I didn’t know what else to say, but my ‘thank you’ still didn’t seem good enough. “I’ll come visit you every day this week. We can talk and watch TV and hang out so you’re not so lonely. Maybe they’ll even let me come to your therapy sessions with you.” I suggested. “That means a lot Bri. I’ll be looking forward to that,” he said happily. I let him lay back down, and when he started to drift off again, I leaned down and kissed him on the cheek. I began walking out of the room, when he called my name. “Brielle,” “Yes, Josh?” I answered, walking back towards his bed. “Promise you’ll come see me first thing tomorrow morning?” “Promise.” I spoke. “Goodnight, Bri,” he whispered, as I turned out the light. “Goodnight, Josh,” I whispered back.
When I reached my hospital room once again, Nancy was currently in there tidying up a few things. “Hey there, girly. Glad to here everything worked out well,” she greeted me. “Me too,” I said, smiling. “Doctor just dismissed you; your parents will be here in a few minutes to take you home. Oh, and the police found this in between the car seats in the vehicle of the accident.” She handed me my cell phone, which suffered only a few minor scratches. I thanked her, then changed into pajamas that my parents had brought me earlier. Nancy walked me to the main lobby, where my parents were waiting for me at the front desk. The ride home was a little nervous for me, because every time I saw bright headlights or speeding cars, I thought of the accident. The whole night felt unreal; like a movie. When I got home, all I wanted to do was sleep. My head was throbbing, not only from the physical injury, but also from being so stressed out. I was glad to be home in my own bed, in my own room. The sound of light raindrops pitter-patting on the roof put me to sleep almost instantly. And the rest of the night, I dreamt of Josh.
