Something More Than Friends *Chapter Eleven, Part Two* Sunday

Something More
Than Friends

*Chapter Eleven, Part Two*

Sunday morning, I threw on some white denim shorts and the pink floral top I wore to the golf course. “Hey, honey, your mom and I have got a surprise for you!” My dad called from downstairs. What could that possibly be? I wondered. Could Josh be home early from the hospital? Skipping down the steps from the upstairs hallway, I flew into my kitchen and my mom and dad were standing by the front door, smiling like those fake parents you see on tv. “What’s going on?” I asked curiously. “See for yourself,” my mom replied, with a satisfied look on her face. My dad opened the front door and pointed to the driveway for me to see. My jaw dropped, and my eyes filled with glee, like a little kid on Christmas morning. Because outside of my house, lying in the driveway, was a brand new, bright white convertible. “Is that mine???” I asked excitedly, not knowing what to say. My mom handed me a pair of keys, and I knew that meant yes. “Thankyou guys soooo much!” I gushed, hugging the both of them. “Can I take it to go see Josh?” I asked. “Well, I don’t see why not,” my dad responded permissively. “Just promise us you’ll be extremely careful.” “I promise,” I said, still smiling like an idiot. I tucked my phone into my back pocket, gracefully grabbed my keys, and headed to the car. My car.

The ride to the hospital was great. The top down, the wind rushing through my hair, the radio turned up. It was like a dream. Pulling into the hospital parking lot, I made sure to park in a spot that was easy to get out of. I turned off the engine, than walked through the hospital doors, anticipating telling Josh all about my new convertible. Maybe I could even take him home in it. I walked past the front desk, up the elevator, than down his hallway to the last room on the left. But when I checked his room, he wasn’t there. In fact, the whole room was neatened up, as if ready for a new patient to use. Strange, I thought. I made my way back down to the lobby’s front desk, and a short woman sat behind it. “May I help you?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied. “Uh, I’m here to see Josh Brady, he was staying in room 104, but I couldn’t find him in there just now.” The woman, who’s nametag read ‘Denise,’ typed in something on the computer my her desk, than her eyes returned back to mine. “I’m sorry, Josh is no longer a patient here,” She apologized. “Oh, I guess the doctors must’ve dismissed him to go home earlier,” I considered aloud. Denise shook her head and sighed, then spoke again. “Actually, no. Early this morning, around 4:00am, Josh was complaining of a headache, so Dr. Finch ran a few tests. Apparently, something with the surgery caused a delayed effect on Josh’s brain, so they immediately transferred Josh to Wesley Hospital, across the state. It was the closest hospital that could treat the issue. I’m sorry for any inconvenience.” I think for a moment, my heart actually stopped beating. What’s wrong with Josh, and when will I ever see him again? I covered my face for a moment, and began to cry softly in my hands. “But, he was supposed to come home today,” I whimpered. I felt like I’d just been struck by lightning in my heart. I turned to leave, my heart had already been crushed enough, but then, the woman called me back. “Wait a minute, are you Brielle?” She questioned. I turned back toward her. “Yes,” I sniffled. “Josh Brady left a note here before he left addressed to a Brielle. Would that be you?” She handed me a small white folded piece of paper that read my name. I took the piece of paper, my hand trembling, slipped it into my pocket, then quietly said thank you. I walked out of the hospital doors back to my car, and just sat in the drivers seat, letting all of my tears pour out, stinging my eyes and burning my heart. I reached into my back pocket, and pulled out the small piece of paper that Josh had left for me to read. I wiped the tears that streamed down my cheeks, unfolded the letter, then began to read the words that Josh left for me to hear.
