Than Friends
*Chapter Fourteen, Part Two*
“Brielle,” he asked,
his voice trembling with fear. “Are you still here?”
I grabbed his had, holding it tightly, crying tears that he
couldn’t see. “I’m here,” I reassured
him. “I can’t see anything. Bri, why can’t I
see you?” he wondered aloud. How could this
happen? “What’s happening?” I demanded the
doctor to answer. “Why can’t Josh see again?”
“I’m so sorry. I honestly don’t know why this
is happening. This has never happened before in any other patient
I’ve seen with this case,” he attempted to explain,
but his explanation wasn’t good enough for me, nor Josh.
“I better go check the tests again and discuss this with
the other doctors and see what they think.” All of the
staff, including both the doctors and the nurses, left the room,
completely baffled that something went wrong again.
“I’m so sorry Josh,” I apologized through my
tears, but I knew my apology couldn’t fix this.
“It’s okay, Brielle,” he spoke softly.
“But it’s not okay.” I confessed, still holding
his hand. “You can’t see me.”
I climbed into his hospital bed and sat next to him, as both of our silent tears came to an end. For the next hour, the two of us just sat there together, holding each other as if letting go would cause the whole world to fall apart.
Out of no where, Josh released himself from my hug and turned to face me. “Bri,” he spoke. “Is everything okay?” I asked.
Then, Josh started to laugh, his voice full of happiness.
“You’re wearing a lime green hoodie.”
“What?” I said, laughing at his sudden statement. Then, I realized something. That statement,
was true.
“Brielle, I don’t know how, but I can see again.
And most importantly, I can see you.” <3
I climbed into his hospital bed and sat next to him, as both of our silent tears came to an end. For the next hour, the two of us just sat there together, holding each other as if letting go would cause the whole world to fall apart.
