*Chapter Nineteen, Part Two*
Later that night, around 8, I
walked outside onto our back porch with a bowl of Ramen noodle
soup in my hand. I hadn’t eaten anything all day since Josh
left, which was strange, because usually all I do is eat when
I’m upset. I walked over to one of the cushioned chairs
next to a table where I could place my soup. The porch had a
magnificent view of the night sky, it was quite mesmerizing. I
looked up at a bright, full moon up in the sky, along with a
million twinkling little stars. But in my eyes, not even all of
the stars in tonight’s sky shone as bright as Josh’s
eyes.
Sipping my soup, I reached for my iPod in the back pocket of my
sweatpants and turned on some music. I wasn’t even in the
mood to listen to One Direction, which was a surprise,
considering I’m always in the mood to listen to them. So
instead, I turned on some Taylor Swift, to drown out my tears and
sorrow. The night air gave off a warm, almost comforting feeling.
When I finished my soup, I brought the bowl and spoon back inside
and grabbed the pink wool blanket from my bedroom. Before walking
back outside though, I noticed a sticky note stuck to the kitchen
counter. It read, “Went to the store to pick up milk and
bread, be back soon. Love, Mom and Dad.” I stuck the note
back on the counter, then headed back outside and returned to my
chair with my blanket and some cookies.
About fifteen minutes after relaxing outside, taking in the
peaceful night, I heard our back gate make a ‘click,’
the sound it makes when it opens. I froze in my seat and dropped
my cookie onto my lap, shuddering at the sound. Probably just
the wind, I thought. But the trees remind still. The air
remained calm. I went back to eating my last cookie, forgetting
about the sound, but fidgeting in my seat. Could’ve
been a cat. There’ve been lots of stray cats running
around the neighborhood, lately. I switched to some Adele songs
and closed my eyes, breathing in the fresh night air. But then, I
heard another noise. Footsteps. Okay, now my heart was
racing. Who’s lurking in my backyard? This is getting
scary. The footsteps were getting closer, but I remained
still in my seat, my body covered with my blanket, only with my
face exposed. The noise was so close now, I felt like it was
right in front of me. Then, to my surprise, a familiar voice
starting singing along with Adele. “But there’s a
side, to you, that I never knew, never knew.” It took a
minute, but then, I recognized that voice. I could recognize it
anywhere. I smiled, thinking it had to be him, but how could it
be? Still singing along, happier then ever, now walking onto my
back porch,
was Josh.
