Jump CHAPTER TWO I woke to the sound of a heart monitoring machine and the warmth of someone holding my hand. My eyelids struggled to open and blurred colours sharpened to objects and people; this familiar, tired face rested itself on the side of the bed beside my leg. Her breathing was even and deep as if she hadn't slept for a long time. "Mum?" I asked, and I realised it hurt to speak; my voice cracked and my throat felt like it consisted of shards of broken glass and sandpaper. She stirred but didn't wake, moving her shoulder slightkt so her creased t-shirt folded even more. Worry lines spread across hee forehead and I could see faint, silver strands of white in her blonde curls. I wanted to raise my hand and run my fingers gently through it, to comfort her and tell her that I hadn't wanted for her to get hurt and that I'd just wanted the pain to go away. But my arm weighed a tonne and sunk into the hospital mattress, making it impossible to lift a finger let alone a hand. It still hurt too much to speak so I just lay there, my eyes half shut, before being lulled back to sleep by the repetitive sound of the heart machine. ~ "How're you feeling?" Asked JJ with a small encouraging smile as he squeezed my hand. The machine, as alway, sat bleeping beside me, but after lying in that hospital for days I'd learnt to live with the annoying noise. Sometimes it even blocked out the memories that were louder at night whilst JJ and mum slept on either side of my bed. Mum had slipped out to grab a coffee and left JJ in charge in case any doctors came with permission slips needing to be signed for documents needing to be read. "Like sh//t," I replied. A humourless laugh escaped both our mouths and lingered in the hospital room until there was this thick, awkward silence. He squeezed my hand again and I almost sensed the question before he asked it. He shut his eyes. He always looked like dad whenever he did that but there was no way I was telling him; we rarely mentioned our abandoning dad, it was like our unspoken rule. "Why did you do it, Brooke?" He whispered. I pulled my hand from his and slipped it under the itchy hospital blanket so he couldn't see it shaking. He opened his eyes and they focused on me. He was pained; I could feel it as he covered his face with his hands, composing himself, before taking a shaky brearh and resting his hand above mine. I considered telling him about the bullying and rhe self harming and the suicide attempts- a problem shared was a problem halved and all that but as he looked at me, waiting, I knew that he wouldnt understand. JJ and I were close but we were different; he'd always found it iteasy to express his feelings, all his friends were on the basketball team and he had a gorgeous girlfriend. He was everything I'd never be. He'd probably think I was weak and one thing worse than Jake Freeman thinking I was a coward was my brother thinking I was one. I couldn't handle that. I looked to the foot of the hospital bed where my file was clipped beside a blue bottle of hand sanitizer. I counted the beats of the heart monitoring machine; one bleep, two bleeps, three, four, five and six. "Brooke," he said, urging me before sighing, "How am I supposes to help you if tou won't tell me what's making you so unhappy?" "Careful JJ you're starting to sound like a counsellor," I joked dryly. I almost sighed with relief when mum walked in holding two cups of coffee because the conversation ended abruptly.
