Take Me Home

Chapter 1

“Drew, where are you taking me?”

“Just keep your eyes closed, we're almost there.”

I shuffled my bare feet across the ground, trying to make sure I didn’t trip over anything. I could feel warm sand between my toes, and I heard the distant sound of roaring waves.

“Alright, open your eyes,” I heard Drew's voice tell me.

I did as he said, squinting against the bright sunlight. Drew was standing before me, smiling with those perfect white teeth. His blue eyes sparkled with glee, his dirty blonde hair hanging loosely in his eyes.

“Surprise!”

It took me a moment to realize where I was.

“Oh my gosh, Drew! You didn't!” I squealed with excitement. I was standing in the middle of my dream date. A big red and white checkered picnic blanket had been laid out on the sand, and a picnic basket filled to the brim with my favorite foods lied in the middle of it. A big umbrella was set up for shade, and I spied surfboards sitting close by.

“I'm glad you like it,” Drew said, picking me up and holding me bridal style.

“Drew!” I laughed. “Put me down!”

“Kiss me first,” he replied, winking at me.

I smiled, before pressing my lips to his. He was such an idiot, but I still loved him. The kiss ended too soon, and he placed me gently on the ground.

“You didn’t have to do this,” I told him, still in shock from the surprise.

“Hey, it’s the least I could do. After all, it is your 18th birthday.” He smiled. “Come on,” he said, nodding towards the ocean. “How about I kick your butt at surfing?”

“In your dreams!” I shouted, grabbing my plain light blue surfboard. I sprinted towards the water, not daring to look behind me and let Drew take the lead. I ran into the water and started to paddle out, soon hearing Drew splash in behind me.

“Try to catch me!” I yelled at him as I paddled towards the biggest wave I could see. Right before I caught it, I glanced behind me to see my boyfriend swimming towards me, only a few feet away.

“See yeah, sucker!” I laughed, before hopping on my board and letting the wave take me away. I closed my eyes for a second and took in a deep breath. This day couldn’t get any better. My boyfriend was the best, he knew me so well. Surfing was one of my favorite hobbies. Well, besides music. I opened my eyes and looked around to see if Drew was riding the wave, too, but he was nowhere in sight. I hopped off the board and let the water pull me under, wondering where he could have gone. Was he playing some sort of joke on me? I popped up, gasping for air, before laughing.

“Drew!” I sputtered. I looked around me, searching for his fiery red surf board. “Drew?”

And then I saw him.

Lying on his surfboard, unconscious, and missing his right arm.
