I whispered. "The person who wrote this, you mean?" he said, taking a piece of paper out of his pocket. It was the letter Jake had given me. "Give that to me," I said, snatching it off of him. "You shouldn't have taken it from me." "I didn't. You dropped it and I came to give it to you, but you were jumping into the river so I never got the chance," he said sarcastically. "Aren't you going to thank me? I saved your life." "I didn't want to be saved," I muttered. "And anyways you shouldn't have read it." I glanced around. My phone was still in the mud, but someone - this man, I assumed - had walked over the writing so you couldn't really make it out. "So, your name's Emily?" he said. "Eh, yeah," I mumbled. "Yours?" "Aidan," he said, extending his hand for me to shake. I shook it and he grinned. "Aidan..." I repeated, chuckling to myself. The name didn't bother me anymore. Of all the names, I thought. "Look, please don't kill yourself," he said. "My father killed himself three years ago and I never got over it. Suicide shouldn't exist. I hate it." Tears filled my eyes. "But Jake..." He raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Why do you think it's your fault? How can it possibly be your fault?" "Well...it's complicated," I said, wiping away tears. "And I'm not sure I want to talk about it." "Come on, then. I'll take you home," Aidan said, standing up. I glared at him. "You think that after all this I'm just going to go home?!" "What do you want to do? Search around for him? I'll help, if you want," he said. "Why are you being so helpful?" I said, my jaw rigid. "Just go away!" "I'm being helpful because you don't handle death very well and I don't like the idea of some kid killing herself," he said. "Unbelievable," I said, shaking my head. "Y'know, I know this other guy called Aidan and he'd probably be the one to tell me to go kill myself." He winced. "I don't think he would." "Oh, he would," I said. "By the way, what happened your lip?" "Oh, you kinda hit me when I was pulling you out of the water. You should take up boxing, y'know," he said. "You could have a hidden talent." The sun was beginning to set. In the distance, I heard a woman scream. "What was that?" I muttered, suddenly alert. I began standing up. Aidan seemed alert, too - why did he care so much? "Maybe she saw him jump in..." I said to myself. I took off sprinting again. Aidan was right beside me, which I was surprised about. Even running, he still looked familiar. We were only running for about two minutes, when we saw the woman. She was standing at the river bank, frozen in horror. "Is he okay?" she said to someone we couldn't see. We got closer and closer. She saw us and frowned in confusion. When we got up to her, I stopped suddenly. "You're a good runner," Aidan said, panting. "Take that up, too, while you're at it, Emily. You have multiple hidden talents." I ignored him. "Jake?" I called out. In the river there was a man pulling someone else - Jake. I was sure it was him. The black hair. That face.... Of course it was him, I'd know him anywhere. "Jake!" The man hauled himself and Jake onto the river back - Aidan ran to help. The lay him on his back. I was actually going there anyways; it’s my best friend’s birthday.” I shrugged. “Well, okay.” “There’s actually a parade going on in the city today,” he informed me, pointing to number 23. “A soldier’s returning from overseas. I don’t know him, but I mean, it’s for a good cause.” “How’d you know?” I asked. “My mom told me. It was in the local news. Wanna do that?” I nodded. “Sure.” As I stood to put the list away, he caught my wrist. “Why didn’t you want anyone seeing that?” I shrugged, looking the paper over. “It’s kind of important to me.
