homerun
part
#2
i was so scared reaching up to the door, i noticed my hand was
starting to shake. i just reached up and took a deep
breath. right before my hand hit the handle, it started to
turn. as if i wasn't going to have a heart attack already,
this would send me overboard. the door swings open only to
reveal my sisters nurse, sam. (her real name's samantha,
but we've gotten to know each other as sam)
"oh, hey devon!"
"hey sam.!" i said, not trying to hide my
disappointment.
"are you going in to see your sister?" she questioned,
as if my face hadn't given away my purpose here already.
"sam, you know i wouldn't be here if i had anything better
to do." i jokingly said
"well today might be a little better." she trailed
off
"really?! is she awake?!" i asked excitedly as i
sprinted into her room. i skidded to a hault. "what's so
exciting about this?" i said curtly
"According to Dr. Lickham, the recent cat scan on her brain
shows that the swelling has gone down quite a bit, and her brain
is healing itself."
"oh really!" i said, maybe a little too excited.
i always tried to act cheerful around everyone, trying to stay
positive about delaney, but i think sam was starting to see
through me.
"well i was going down to get some lunch, you want to
come?" she asked. she would ask this a lot, because
she knew i didn't like to eat a lot. i've clearly lost weight
since delaney's been in to hospital.
"uhm no thanks, i was just gonna put a few pictures up, and
leave."
"oh really? what are these from?" she asked, snatching
the pile of photos i had from recent graduation parties and bbqs
we've had. there was a bulletin board for people who had
brain injuries to put pictures up to see if they remember.
i filled up the bulletin board, so i moved on to the rest of the
wall.
"oh just some of my senior friend's parties, they were some
of dee's friends too."
"and who's this?" she asked pulling out a picture of
pat. i guess i forgot to pull that one out of there.
"its just one of my good guy friends.." i said, hoping
she wouldn't pry
"i'm guessing you want this one back." she said handing
it, and the rest of the pictures to me. "see you
around" she said as she walked away.
i turned around and walked into the room, and sat in my
seat. it was next to this little table, that always had a
box of tissues, a trashcan, and a hershey's bar on it.
someone would always see me use them all, and replace them for
the next time i went on a crying bit in the room. i asked
sam about it, and she said she didn't know who it was. they
would always leave me a little note, with the same little quote
on it everyday. don't worry, everything will turn out
the way you want. i was kind of giving up hope on this
little quote. i felt a crying spout coming on, so i sat
down, ready to brace the next few hours
alone.
