AESTHETICS
The proof of an artist is in being able to express genuine human
gesture within any given restraints.
Any medium is both a freedom and a jail. True character can shine
through the bars of the jail of a medium by modulating the
limited range in which there is freedom.
The receptive audience innately adapts to the framework of the
medium and looks for the spark of freedom within, which
represents the gesture of another human being. In other words, we
recognize each other by the marks we leave on the world, and an
artist is one who makes those marks intentionally and formally,
rather than unintentionally and informally, for the purposes of
transmission.
An artist needs to be clever in order to understand how to work a
medium and needs to have something real to express in order to
make the cost of working in the medium pay off in the end.
