Why do sophomores hate "freshmEn" and not "freshmAn" like the rest of them? Huh? Huh?

vvv in high school there are 4 levels, freshman at the bottom then sophmore then juniors then seniors at the top who will graduate off to college. Since freshman are at the bottom and are the youngest, no one likes them... including them I guess lol

I'm Australian and I don't get the whole American high school system. Can someone explain it?
