I had my blood taken today. They needed to fill two vials. I watched as the nurse seated the needle beneath my flesh. It quickly filled with blood, de-oxygenated and the colour of Bordeaux wine. I felt comfort in that moment,seeing something that belongs to me being stolen. Seeing something so important, something so essential to life, being taken so easily. They made it look so effortless. I welcomed the sting of the antiseptic and I welcomed the throb of my inner elbow. I welcomed the slight loss of life.
