the illegals
chapter 1
part 1
My stomach churned as I breathed in the aromatic smells drifting from the café across the street. I shivered in the cold, the chilling wind blowing through the rips and tears in my clothes. Fog rose from the ground from the early morning rain. People gave me askance glances as they passed my helpless state, and most of them showed little pity.
One man that passed by threw a barely eaten bagel in the trash. I quickly scampered to the trash can hoping it would make a decent breakfast. I grabbed it out of the trash can. It was still warm. I took a slow bite into it, enjoying the blueberry chunks that were placed in the bagel. It was the most satisfying thing I had eaten in months.
I maneuvered my way down the crowded streets of Boston, hoping to find a warm, dry, safe place for me to rest until I got hungry again. I was supposed to meet up with Kyle and the rest of the refugee’s later... but I didn’t know when… or where. We had to be rather secretive about our presence.
I was illegal. I wasn’t supposed to exist… and my mother had enough care to allow me to live, but that’s probably because she was too poor to have an abortion. In 2200, a law was passed to help stop the overpopulation of America… each family was only allowed to 3 children. I was my mother’s forth, born secretly and raised on the streets with other out cast until I could fend for myself.
I saw a guard approaching near where I was as I threw away the paper left over from my bagel, asking around for ID. I had yet to get a fake one from Mark… a Freedomeer, or someone who was helping us gain as much freedom as we could, there were a very scarce amount of them. I dodged into a near by ally and ran as hard as I could until I was sure I was in safety.

the illegals
chapter 1
part 3
Do you know where we are supposed to meet up with everyone? I heard from Sara that there was supposed to be a meeting soon.”
“I think were meeting at Mark’s place. He should send someone to tell us soon.”
I sighed. I really looked forward to our meetings. Being with everyone gave me a reason to live for tomorrow. I cold wind blew hard through the ally’s tall walls. The shadows hid Eli and me pretty well.
I wouldn’t mind waiting here with Eli for a little bit. I looked up at his sparkling hazel eyes that were always filled with hope. His blonde hair was matted with ash, probably from working in a factory for very little income, making it look grayer than light yellow. Soot spotted his cheeks, but wasn’t matted enough to cover his freckles that danced over his knows and along his cheeks.
He grabbed my hands and cupped them in his to keep them warm. I smiled and closed my eyes, and soon enough I had fallen asleep.
short... but end of chapter 1 :)

We met in kindergarten. We were best friends.
She always told me she loved my eyes. I didn't quite know why.
I was in love with her, so of course my face lit up immensely whenever she said it.
She was beautiful, kind, and extremely funny.
We'd be talking about nothing, and she'd turn to me and whisper,
"I like your eyes."
One day, I was playing basketball,
waiting for her to drive over to my house to have a game with me.
Suddenly, I got a phone call.
It was her mom. She was in a panic.
I couldn't quite understand what she was saying. It sounded like,
"Aaron, come quick! Kelsey, accident, Main Street! Blood. Come now!"
I had no clue what happened,
so I ran to Main Street with my basketball shorts and a tee shirt on.
I saw Kelsey's mom helplessly crying, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
I saw a totaled car, blood everywhere.
Then I saw her, Kelsey.
My heart stopped as I frantically ran over to her.
"Kelsey? Kelsey!" She was unconscious. I started crying.
I know it isn't very manly, but I couldn't help it.
Before I could say anymore, the medics took her away,
the main source of blood coming from her head.
I went to the hospital that night,
I went every night.
in fact, the only time I left was to go out to eat, but that's it.
The doctors tried getting me to leave, but I refused.
It was all my fault.
If it wasn't for me, wanting to play basketball with her,
she wouldn't be going through this.
It was already four days, and she hasn't woken up.
On the fifth day, I saw her eyes gently open.
"Kelsey?" I called.
She wasn't quite awake yet.
Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside.
I did, for a few hours.
One of the doctors finally came out saying,
"I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?"
"Yes," I whispered.
He bit his lip.
"She woke up, she's fine,
but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss."
"Are you serious?" I almost shouted.
"I'm afraid so."
I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't.
I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again.
"You can go see her if you want,
but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom."
I walked in, trembling in horror.
I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept.
I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again.
I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out.
Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered,
"I don't know you, but I like your eyes."
