Secretly In Love.
Chapter Nine

School started on a Friday which was stupid because that meant we only had one day of school and then we had a two day weekend. "Let's go to the mall," Jess suggest. "I need new shoes and I'm sure you need a break from thinking about Chris." "Call Ashlen and Carolyn," I said. "I don't want to think or talk to Chris for a while." Carl was going to drive us to the mall. He was the only person that we knew that had a car on such short notice. "Can Ashlen come?" I asked, watching Carolyn walk from across the street. "No," Jess said, frowning. "She said, 'Bible Study' but I know that's a lame excuse." Carl sighs. "I'll drive you three to the mall. Call me later to pick you girls up."

After grabbing three orange smoothies, we walked into bebe. "You should get this," Carolyn said to me. She hands me a turquoise sweater. I shrugged. "It doesn't seem right to shop without Ashlen." Jess nods, reading a novel. "Ashlen is the fashionista after all." She flips to the next page. I sighed. "I might as well. I like it." I pressed the sweater against myself and looked at a mirror. We walked out after Carolyn and I purchased a few stuff. "So where do we go next?" I asked. "Didn't you say that you need new shoes?" I start to walk ahead of them. With their pace, they'll never make it on track. "C'mon you guys," I say, stopping dead in my track. "We don't have all day." I turned around to see them staring at something. I followed their gaze to see why they stopped. Because coming up the escalator was Chris. And he was holding Ashlen's hand. "I don't believe her!" Carolyn screams, slamming the door behind me. I sat quietly between Carolyn and Jess. "I didn't know she was going to do that," Jess said. She places her hand on my shoulder. "She gave me reasons why you shouldn't fall for him but she never told me that she was going to go after him." Jess looks at me. "Honest. I didn't know." "I believe you," I whispered, softly, nearly croaking.

Chapter Eight

At the end of the day, I got up to the front of the school waiting for my brother. Carolyn grabbed my arms. "I think he likes you back." "What?" I nearly tripped and fell. The front of my school is a bit like a small "hill". Carolyn shrugs. "We'll IM each other later to think of what to do." Out of the entire group, Carolyn was the only one who was supportive. Jess appears next to me. "I think you should give up on him." She sits down next to me. "Why?" I asked. "Do you need a ride home?" "Yea," she says. "Also because Ashlen and I think he's hung over on Shana." "That was years ago," I said. "Isn't it time for him to move on?" "Ask yourself this," Jess said. "Does he want to move on first?"

My brother Carl comes to the curve. "Need a lift, Jessica?" "Don't call me that!" Jess screams. She hates that name because it was too "girly". I saw Chris walking from the gym with his guy friends. He looked so happy. I wished he could be more happy. I really did but maybe I should move on. Yea right. I'm not that crazy. I bit my lips. I was thinking if I should tell him I like him or just lay low for a while and hope for a miracle that he likes me back. I jumped up. Someone was knocking on the door. "Hello?" I said, opening the door. I looked through the screen door. Carolyn and Jess. "Can we come in?" Carolyn asked. "We don't want you to hate us," Jess said. I notice she had her laptop with her. "Okay..." I said. I stepped aside to let them in. Carolyn sat on the couch, staring at the tiled floor. "I think Chris likes someone," Jess said. "Why do you think that?" I asked. "He talks about how she's great to him and stuff," Carolyn says. "And you think I'm not?" I asked. I felt hurt and confused. "We're not sure," Jess said. "He talks a lot about her."

Chapter Seven

"Aimee!" Carolyn Noels, one of my best friends screams. Apparently, we had the same PE class. Carolyn and I were born one day apart at the same hospital. How freaky is that? Carolyn pulls out her drawing to look busy. The first day of PE is always in the gym where the coaches are talking about what you're going to do and etc. "Did you hear?" she whispered. She pretends to be drawing. "About?" I pulled out a book and pretend to read it. "Shana," Carolyn whispered. "She's back." Shana was Chris's first girlfriend. The one that broke up with him on his birthday to be with his cousin.

I had Jess the class before lunch which is a good thing because even though my school isn't that big, some places were really crowded. We made it all the way to our lunch table. "There you are!" Ashlen says. "We've been waiting forever!" "We just got lunch a minute ago," Jess said, sitting next to Carolyn. I sat down across from Chris. That was when I noticed Shana Grays walking towards our table. "Chris?" she says, her eyes went big. "I don't believe it." I saw that she was holding hands with some guy. I think she broke up with Chris's cousin. But that was years ago. Who knew what was happened. "I miss you so much," Shana says. She flips her dyed hair behind her. "I guess," Chris said, looking bummed out. He pulls a French fry from my plate and tossed it in his mouth. Shana gives me a little wave. "Well. I'm going to go back to Vincent now. I'll see you guys soon." She links her arms with her boyfriend and walks off, happy. Chris grabs his bag. "I'm going to go--" "Don't Chris," Carolyn said. "Get over her! She moved on--" "Real soon after she cheated on you," Ashlen comments. I looked at Chris. "Please stay. I don't want anything bad to happen. I might get another nightmare of Alyssa. He looks at me. "Fine. But only because you asked me to stay." That made my day.

Chapter Six

Carl walks down the stairs, "zombie style", and slumped into a chair next to me. "Morning sis," he yawns. He was still in his PJs. Did he forget today was the first day of school. He uncaps the bottle of milk and pours it into a bowl and dumps a huge load of Fruit Loops in. Uncle Ben walks down the stairs. He was watching us again because mom and dad had some fancy ski trip to go to. He stops fixing his hair when he sees Carl in his boxers and white t shirt. "Did you forget something?" Uncle Ben asked, crossing his arms. I was staring at his hairy arms. Why do guys have to prove they were hairier then girls? I mean, there was one guy who barely had any hairy legs but that's because he "waxes" them. "Huh?" Carl looks up from his cereal. "What do you mean?" He looks at me and takes in that I was wearing a new tee and jeans. "Is today Church?" Carl asked. He had a look of confusion on his face. "No," I said. I grabbed another toast. "It's school. And you're going to be late and make me late because you can drive yet you look like you're from the undead." Carl jumps up. "School?" He starts to panic and trip as he rushed up the stairs. "Someone's going to tell him that you guys still have an hour before school," Uncle Ben said. After I picked up my schedule outside the front office, I decided to go looking for my friends. "Have you seen Ashlen Madison?" I asked. I knew a lot of the people that went here. We all basically grew up together. "Aimee!" I saw Jess appear from the crowd. "There you are. Ashlen and I were looking for you." "Where were you guys?" I asked. I glanced at my cell phone. We still had fifteen minutes before the warning bell. Chris was talking to Ashlen as Jess and I walked up to them. "This is our spot from now on to meet every morning," she says. I looked at where she was looking. I see why she wanted to sit here. It was across from the "Dance" team class. No. They don't do ballet or stupid old dances. They do "dance off" kind of dances. The bell rings so I gave them all a hug. I hugged Chris last and then headed to Health in room 73, wherever that is.

Chapter Five

I went to my psychiatric again. Dad's making me. "And what did you see this time?" she asked, sliding her glasses up her nose. I'm not sure why people do that. Is it to make them look smarter? "I was the one who could have saved her," I whispered. "But her boyfriend stopped me and held me back." She pulls her glasses off which is dumb because the whole entire hour, she's been sliding them on. "You've been doing better, Aimee." She said. "You've made progress."I got up. "See you next week? Chris was waiting for me, outside. How sweet. "What are you doing here?" I asked, watching a few leaves fly across the street. "I didn't want you to walk home by yourself," he says. He reaches up as we pass under a tree. He is very tall. We stopped at an intersection. I could see my house from here. "You don't have to do this," I tell him, secretly I did though. Jess and I are next door neighbors. This is how she probably saw Chris and me walking closely together. I gave him a hug the second we were at my front porch. "See you at school tomorrow," he says. "First day of high school." I sighed and waved at him once more before heading inside. Jess walks in my house. She knows where the spare key is. "We told you not to fall for him," Jess says. "I don't know," I said. "He's different around me." I walked into the kitchen and headed for the fridge. I pulled out a carton of orange juice. "That's because he feels sorry of what happened four years ago," Jess said, throwing her hands in the air. She sighs and sits down across from me. "Trust me Aim, We're just trying to watch over you--" "Then don't," I snapped. I nearly overfilled the cup. "I can watch myself." "After what happened to you?" Jess said. "Please Aimee. Ashlen and I can see Chris from a different point of view."

Chapter Four

Ashlen had two older half-brothers and a step sister.  They are really rude, and super snooby. They make Ashlen look like a saint.  "C'mon," Ashlen said, grabbing my hands. I was the shortest out of all of them and they treated me like a doll. Chris sighs and plops down on the couch, sitting next to me. "Great," he says, rolling his eyes. "We're watching some dumb chick flick."  Ashlen grins and pushes herself between Chris and me.  "It's my house, it's my choice." "I thought it was the guest's choice," Jess points out.  "Hey," Ashlen snaps, pushing her hair behind her ear. "You have no say in this." She does the 'zip your lip' move. Ashlen starts to shriek halfway through the move slapping both me and Chris.  Jess was sitting on the floor. Oh, what I would do to not be sitting by  Ashlen. Then the movie went into a dramatic part where  some buff guy ditches his girlfriend to save the one he truly loves who is drowning.  Maybe 'Harold' should have saved Alyssa instead of trying to save himself.

Chapter Three

Chris holds my hand and squeezes it. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you're safe." I nod, smiling. I glanced at Jess who gave me a thumbs up. All of my best friends knew what happened that day and they've been trying ever since to get me over the fear.  Ashlen coughs, loudly. She hates it when she wasn't the center of attention. She was used to the spotlight. I loved swimming. I used to be a big fan of marine biology and all sorts. You know, if you experienced a freak accident you wouldn't be such a great big fan anymore. "See," Chris tells me after he piggybacked me out of the water. "At least we made some progress." "Progress?" Ashlen snorts. "She started screaming the second you let go of her." Jess crosses her arms. "I think she made real progress," she said, peeling me off Chris's back. I couldn't tell if I was clinging onto him because I was afraid of falling and drowning or I just wanted to be close to him. Ashlen pulls her black hair into a ponytail. "Let's go up to Daddy's beach house." Did I forget to mention I live really close to the beach? It's such a horrible thing because every night, as I look out the window, I'll always see the rocks that took my sister's life.

Chapter Two

-Flashback-
I was only ten at the time. Mom and dad were busy on a trip so Uncle Ben was suppose to watch us. "Don't go to far," he said. He was dad's brother. "We wont," my older sister, Alyssa, said. She was every parent's 'perfect child' or an example of the perfect child. "We're going to teach you how to surf," her boyfriend said. He tickles her and she threw her head back to laugh. I looked at the beach to see my older brother, Carl, on land next to Uncle Ben. They both were afraid of the water. The second we were behind the pier, he said: "Let's ditch your little sister. I'm sure she can swim," he says. "We can't," Alyssa said. "Mom and dad will kill me. She tattles." "What a rat," he says. "She's only ten," Alyssa points out. He sighs. "C'mon. Your uncle can't see us and I doubt he would go out this far and we're close to the pier. Nothing bad can happen." I looked up at the dock. It was three times as tall as I was, in the water. I would never be able to get up there. But that was when it all happened. I can't remember what really happened exactly but I do remember most of it. "Let's go," Harold said. He grabs her hand. "I'm not going without her," Alyssa said. He sighs. "We'll teach her how to surf later. How about we swim around the deep end first and then come back two minutes later. See, two? That way, she can't get lost and we'll be back soon." He pulls me up and places me on the dock and puts my board next to me. Alyssa looks at me, frantic. "Don't go anywhere. Don't follow any guys who has 'candy'. Don't go try to save yourself if you look in the water and see your reflection." I watched them go out further. The waves were starting to get harder and harder because I got splashed once or twice. That was when I noticed huge rock boulders out there. "Alyssa!" I screamed. Getting on my toes. "Don't go!" But they ignored me. The waves, the crashing water, and the shark rocks. They will be always tattooed in my memories. I remember hearing her cry of pain before she disappeared. I remember the sirens,  the coast guards watching over me while the others went searching for Alyssa. I remember them finding Harold shortly after getting me safe on land. He acted like he cared, but I knew he couldn't care less. My brother, Carl, gave me a hug. "They'll find her. They'll find her." I snapped. I did. I started screaming and scratching Harold. "This is your fault!" I screamed. "If it wasn't for you she would be safe, on land playing 'Go Fish' with me!" And from that day. I never forgave what's-his-face.

Secretly In Love.
Chapter One

"Okay," Jess said, handing me a shell. "This is to complete your somewhat castle." It was the last day of summer before High School. You know, 'Freshman Year'. The year of pain, doom, misery, and getting tormented by other grades. I know it's lies. My brother was just trying to get to me. I took the shell and placed it at the top of the castle.  Ashlen looks up from her magazine. "Are you two kids done with your stupid castle?" She was the leader of our group, super rich, and yes, spoiled. Jess throws a handful of sand at  Ashlen. Jess was the total opposite of Ashlen. She came from a big family and had pride. I saw Chris walk out of the water, shaking his hair. Water dripping off the ends of his bangs. Ashlen and Jess told me not to 'fall' for him. One. He was like my best guy friend. Two, his ex dumped him for his cousin. Ouch. Chris gave me a grin and a nod. I looked at the ocean, trying not to look at him. I didn't want him to know I had a crush on him. I was very insecure as a person. Ashlen got up to show her skinny body and long legs. She pulled her hair scrunchy off and her silvery-blonde hair  fell around her face. "Lets go swimming," Ashlen said. "I bought this swim suit for a reason." "To show off what a stick you are," Jess said. She pushed her black hair behind her ear. "I didn't bring my suit. I'll just stay on land and guard Aimee's castle." Chris looked at me. "Think you can handle it?" I looked at the wave. My heart started to beat. "Yea," I said. I never went swimming after the accident.
