- Chapter Three I rose in the morning and looked at my alarm clock. It was 6:43 on Friday, but we had a four day weekend. I had a pretty good idea what I was going to do this weekend. I brushed out my hair, got dressed, and brushed my teeth. Then I grabbed my wallet, keys, and wrote a note that said: Hi Mom! I'm driving down to visit some friends back home. Call me when you wake up! Love, Alysaa. :) I stuck it on the counter and walked out the door. * * * I was feeling a little hungry, so I pulled into a diner. There was a few old people sitting, drinking coffee, and a waitress came up to me and asked what she can get me. I got scrambled eggs and orange juice. I paid the waitress and walked out the door. As I stepped out the door, a gust of wind hit me, and I buttoned up my jacket. As I was concentrating on my jacket buttons, I tipped and fell down on the cold pavement. "Ow" I mumbled. "Oh, hun, are you okay?" the waitress said from behind me. "Yeah, thanks. I'm just clumzy." * * * After a few hours of driving, I pulled into my old driveway. The lights were still off. I walked up the path and got the key out from under the mat. As I walked in, I took in the famillar smell of hickery and the wood stove my dad uses for heat. I walked into the kitchen and started the coffee pot, like I used to do every morning. I was always a early riser, dad usually woke late in the afternoon on days he didn't work. I looked at the clock on the oven. 1:23. That's about right. I stood there for a minture or two, just taking it all in. I was happy here. This was were I truly belonged. I walked into the living room, dad left the TV on, I shut it off, and crept around to the sitting room. This room was all windows, with a bookshelf, two chairs, and a grand piano. I sat down and played my and my dad's favorite song to play, I Giorni. Then I felt rough, worn hands on my shoulders. Dad sat next to me and played with me. My dad's hands have worn and bruised after years of hard labor, but he can play piano like a dream. After we finished, no words were spoken. We just hugged. Minutes passed when Dad said, "Alyssa, what are you doing here?" "I missed you, Dad. I want to move back. I miss it here so much." "Honey-" "I made your coffee, like I used to every morning! Dad, please. . ." "Alyssa, you know the deal your mother and I made, she misses you, and you need to see the world, outside this little town." I didn't respond to this, I just stared at the piano keys. "What did you do to your chin, sweetie?" Dad asked, as he examined my scrape. "I tripped and fell earlier, Dad. It's nothing." "Hmm, okay. Well, let me put something on it. Come on." We walked upstairs ad Dad put some medicine on it. Like it? If it wasn't for me, wanting to play basketball with her, she wouldn't be going through this. It was already four days, and she hasn't woken up. On the fifth day, I saw her eyes gently open. "Kelsey?" I called. She wasn't quite awake yet. Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside. I did, for a few hours. One of the doctors finally came out saying, "I understand that you're Kelsey's friend, Aaron?" "Yes," I whispered. He bit his lip. "She woke up, she's fine, but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss." "Are you serious?" I almost shouted. "I'm afraid so." I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't. I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again. "You can go see her if you want, but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom." I walked in, trembling in horror. I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept. I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again. I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out. Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered, "I don't know you, but I like your eyes."
