[What do you think?]
She'd gotten through the first three quarters of the day relatively
well, considering. She was only called on to answer a question once
and it hadn't been all too hard. The brown haired boy- Nate, was no
where to be seen and she had been able to slip in and out of
classes without being noticed too much. No one had come up to her,
no one really cared that she was here. That was a very good thing
to Andy.
It was lunch break now, and everyone was all but stampeding towards
the cafeteria to get the warmest food. It was unbelievable how fast
people could go when they were hungry. Andy had hung back until
only the stragglers were left in the hallways, hoping to not be
crowded. The cafeteria was filled with kids with loaded trays, and
the smell of grease. Andy wrinkled her nose and tightened her blond
ponytail uncomfortably. Almost all of the tables were filled, maybe
this hadn't been such a great idea after all.
She just stood there looking a like an idiot, or so she thought,
watching everyone eat. She was about to go sit in a corner and wait
until no one was in line when she saw out the corner of her eye, a
few scattered people walking outside. Right! They didn't say anyone
had to stay inside to eat, and it didn't look like a lot of people
were out since it was so hot. Andy edged around a group of black
clothed teens who looked as if they'd never seen daylight and
quickly, almost ran towards the door.
Outside it was a billion times quieter, with only a few scattered
teens dumb enough to sit in the scorching heat. They spoke under
their breath as if it was even too hot to speak normally, huddled
together. Andy knew at once that they would be easily ignored,
easily pushed out of her mind. It was a relief to be out of the
hectic bustle of the school, away from so many prying eyes. She
sank down into the yellow green grass and drew her knees up to her
chin, resting her head lightly on them. Now that things had calmed
it was as if her body finally wanted to let go of all of that
tension at once, and she suddenly felt weak and tired. She closed
her eyes and let out her breath slowly to clear her mind. Calm
down.... deep breaths.
The break didn't last long enough for her to completely wind down,
but when she entered the building again and made her way to her
History class, she felt remarkably calm. She brushed a strand of
lonely blond hair out of her face and tucked it back into her messy
ponytail before walking into the class. Her history teacher was
almost the exact opposite of her math teacher- Ms. Jenell. He was
as cranky and although in his mid thirties he looked ancient. His
hair was black, turning a salt and pepper color already and he
dressed in suit like clothes. His patience was very low and Andy
took an instant dislike to him as did the others. His name was
George Myer but he was soon to pick up the nickname of Killjoy, not
to face of course.
The day dragged on as if it were endless, as teacher after teacher
began the studies of his or her class- drilling as much information
to each teenagers mind as they could. Most of them had only the
objective of getting them through the year and tossing them to the
next grade like a sack of potatoes. They didn't really care what
the students thought of them. The only teacher even tolerable was
Ms. Jenell and she was a bit iffy because after all, she was a math
teacher.
The bell finally did ring, its loud buzz sounding to Andy like an
angel coming to save them. Her tolerance of being confined with so
many others was reaching its breaking point, and it's sound had
released her from prison unlike the similar buzz of her alarm. The
moments its sound rung through the class, she sprung out of her
seat as fast as she could and half ran towards the classroom door.
She reached for the door's handle and was about to pull it free and
make her escape from confinement when a hand whirled her around to
face the other way. Letting out a yelp of surprise and fear, Andy
almost couldn't contain the scream that suddenly fulled her lungs
when she turned to face the smirking face of Brian Derks, the ever
so popular class clown' Gulping back the postponed scream she
glared at the sandy haired boy indignantly. "Go away" she
said, in a voice far firmer than she felt, pushing his hand from
off of her shoulder. He cocked an eyebrow as if she were insane,
"Where are you in such a hurry to go?" he asked with what
she portrayed as an evil smile, though she thought it just made him
look sick. She kept her glare level although her hands were
starting to shake as she backed up, only to find herself against a
wall. Kids were crowding past them as if they hadn't a care in the
world what was happening, and really they didn't.
"You know, you're far too gorgeous to be alone all the time,
you should hang out with us." he said. His voice resembled
that of a cat's purr. The sound made Andy feel sick to her stomach.
Still she didn't say anything. Brian grinned at her haughtily,
seeing that she was shaking slightly. Andy was about to break down
as he stood there, blocking her path, and would of if suddenly it
hadn't been as if Brian was flying through the air to the side.
This time, Andy did scream as in a flash- someone pushed the large
boy aside and growled menacingly. The boy now standing there,
pinning Brian against the wall as he had been doing to Andy just
moments ago had appeared so suddenly she hadn't had time to see who
it was, but as she saw now it was indeed the dark haired guy from
her history class- the one she had presumed wasn't here today,
Nate. Her eyes widened as she stepped away a bit, still shaken.
"Bug off Derks" Nate growled, pushing Brian away as if he
weighed nothing. His green eyes flashed before he glanced over at
Andy as if to make sure she was unharmed, but she was already
wheeling around to sprint out of the school out into the sunshine.
She didn't know what it had been that Brian had wanted, but she
didn't want to find out. Nate looked to make sure Brian wasn't
going to try anything else, seeing the other male slunk off and
standing with his group of friends and giving him dagger looks. He
just returned the look before stalking off like a wolf ready to
attack if need be.
