A second chance
chapter 5

We arrived in California and it was beautiful. Even at night when you could barely see the ocean it was amazing. I caught myself smiling, which I thought I would never do right now. During the whole ride, dad was passed out. He almost died once again, but was quickly saved by the skilled medics. They dropped us at the hospital and rushed dad into the hospital. I really hated these hospitals.
We followed the people into the hospital and got into my dad's room. He woke up in the transition from helicopter. When I saw that his eyes were open and looking at me, I was ecstatic. But when I looked closer, I saw that they were filled with pain, and that killed me. I couldn't stand seeing him in pain.
"Hey honey" Dad forced it out of his mouth. It seemed to take a lot of effort.
"Daddy," I cried.
I rushed over to him and gently hugged him.
"I'm-" he grunted loudly. "I'm..." and his eyes fluttered shut again. His heart rate increased.
I yelled for the doctors as loud as I could, and they rushed in. By the time they were in, though, he was stable again. I didn't get it, he should have been dead. Don't get me wrong, though, I was so happy that he was alive at this moment.
"He's just going to have to rest for a bit. There's about a 75% chance he could die. He should be dead now, though, so it's already a miracle. He's healed a bit already." A doctor whispered to me so Ben couldn't hear.
I snapped my eyes to my dad, we still needed him a lot.
She also told us how we were registered in school for tomorrow because we just happened to be living about 10 minutes away from this hospital. My dad got his job around here and registered us so we could start school immediately. So, I guess Ben and I would be going to school tomorrow.
I woke up in a hospital chair and scared myself a bit. I had forgotten what happened last night for a moment, but when I looked at my brother and dad, I remembered. I tiptoed over to my dad, careful not to wake Ben. It was 6 A.M and he didn't have to be up for about half an hour.
"Hey dad, how you feeling?" I asked my dad, but his eyes were closed.
He moaned loudly, waking Ben up. I turned to Ben and told him that he should start getting ready for school. He got up and got changed. I figured I should start getting ready, too, so I joined him.
I let my naturally wavy dark brunette hair hang down my back and put on my prettiest hollister tank top and some jean shorts. I looked nice, not like a s/ut. I should be making a good impression on my first day, except for the fact that my face was red and puffy. My green eyes were red on the outside and my pale freckles that were strewn across my nose were glowing. I splashed some cold water on my face, said goodbye to my dad, and walked off to school.

Okay guys, it should get better from now on. I just needed to lay down a base before I really started. I really appreciate everyone that's reading. Thanks so much!

A second chance
chapter 4

"Dad?" He was awake, I swear. I don't know how it was even close to possible, but it happened, he was awake.
He moaned and tightly shut his eyes. He started moaning like crazy, screaming almost. I've never seen my dad moan, or scream, because of pain. Not even when his leg was half burnt off. His head must've been bad, really, really bad.
"We need help in here!" The doctor screamed. Then he turned to us and told us to get outside quickly. I didn't want to leave the room, so I just led Ben to the corner of the room. Dad started violently shaking and then he went limp. It must have been a seizure. This day couldn't get worse. Doctors lined up around my dad and started doing medical stuff on him. I didn't know what was happenning, but I heard the beeping thing get faster and faster. He was dying all over again.
But then it slowed, it slowed to a point where it almost seemed like a regular heartbeat. I don't know how it happened, but it seemed like my dad had died and come back to life. He was alive, and I might almost say well. I mean, besides for the hole in his head, but his heartrate was normal. The doctors seemed to stand in awe around him for a moment, until the other crash patients started rolling in the door. The doctors ran out of the room, except for the one that said there could always be a miracle, a second chance. He told us that we had to leave, they were going to ship my dad to a hospital in California. They would take all of us in a helicopter from Colorado to California and it would be here soon. I guess we were leaving for California, now. Just like my dad wanted us to do the next morning. I told Ben to get in the car and I followed him. I needed to at least get us some clothes and money from home.
I got home, got my packed bags, got Ben's bags that I packed, and got my father's bags. I also picked up the lottery ticket that my dad bought for tomorrow. I don't get why he always bought them, there's no way we would ever win. Then, we left for the hospital again. When we got there, a chopper was loading my dad into it. Perfect timing. Ben and I climbed into it when he started crying.
"It's okay Ben, we'll be fine." I tried to calm him down. It didn't help, but we took off.

A second  chance
chapter 3

I heard  footsteps behind me and turned around to see who it was.
"He lost a lot of blood, I'm really sorry, but I don't think he will make it." The doctor stepped closer to me and my family.

I turned back and looked at my dad's pale face. He did lose a lot of blood, and I knew that.
"He's on life support, isn't he" I turned and asked the doctors. He nodded at me in reply.
My dad was going to die. I didn't want to admit it, but he was.
"Marley, what's happening?" Ben whined at me. The poor kid, 5 years old and he's not going to have any parents. I looked at his burned face. The doctors said in about a year it should be fully healed, all his burns. I just hoped that was true.
"Ben, it's okay, baby. It's ok." Once again, I tried to assure both of us, but I don't think it helped.
"Marley, is it? Well, there's still a chance. Don't give up yet. Miracles happen, you know. Some people just deserve a second chance.
I nodded and smiled. I don't know how I could be smiling at a moment like this, but something about  what he said gave me hope.
"We're going to have to take him off." The doctor blurted out of nowhere.
"What!?! You haven't even given him an hour! You can't just take him off like that! Are you crazy?!" I could have gone into more detail about what I said, but I highly doubt you want to hear it.
"There was a huge plane crash, we need all of these beds. I'm really sorry, miss. We can only take patients that can pay at this time, I'm sorry."
I didn't even know that hospitals can do this. But I guess I couldn't complain, they had to. I closed my eyes and nodded.
"Ben, go say bye to daddy."
He ran up to him and hugged him.
"Bye daddy, I'll see you tomorrow. I'll miss you, but that's okay because you'll be okay. Marley said so."
"Ben, Ben, you won't see him tomorrow. He has to go, he won't be here"
"You're lying!" He screamed at me.
I picked him up and hugged him as the doctor unplugged the life support.
Then, my dad's eyes opened.

A second chance
chapter 2

There was blood everywhere, pouring from his head. Not again, this can't be happening. I dialled 9-1-1 into my cell phone and pressed call. The operater picked up and I told her to send an ambulance immediately, then I hung up. I was shaking from head to toe, he was losing a lot of blood.
I guess he must've fallen with his new leg. It really isn't working for him. He used to use crutches constantly but just recently he was fitted for a new leg, but he really can't balance with it.
I looked at his burnt leg, it was gone in some places, just gone. They told me that it would have to be amputated, quickly. If not, he would die. He came out of surgery and they said it wasn't a very clean cut because the burn was at such an odd angle, so it would be hard to him to get fitted for a leg.
I snapped out of it. He needed me right now, I couldn't go into a mental meltdown like I do just about every day. I grabbed the closest towels and papertowels and pressed them up against the hole in his head. Then I heard the sirens. I opened up the door just as the medics were running up the driveway. I prayed that they weren't to late as I led them to my dad.
They lifted him up into the stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance. I stayed behind because my little brother would be home soon and if I left, he would be home alone without me or dad. I waited about ten minutes and Ben came home at 8 o'clock sharp. I loaded him into the car and I drove off to the hospital. I might only have a learner's permit but I wasn't going to stop that from seeing my dad.
"Where's daddy?" My 5 year old brother asked me.
"He's at the hospital, Buddy. He fell down and got hurt, but we'll go see him now and he'll be all better." I assured him, and myself. I knew that it wasn't true, though.
"Oh, that's good. I have lots to tell him about soccer practice." Ben exclaimed.
"That's great, Buddy." I half-heartedly replied as I pulled up to the hospital.
I grabbed Ben out of the back seat and ran up to the front desk.
"Name?" The pudgy lady asked me.
"Butler" I said, out of breath.
She looked at me like she was in shock.
"I'm sorry, baby. He's- he's in a coma. The doctors are doing everything they can to help, but we're not sure if he'll make it."
Ben tugged at my shirt. "Marley, where's daddy?'
"Hold on Ben." I turned back to the lady. "Can we see him?"
She nodded and sent us down the hall to our dad.
I opened the door and saw the bloody bandages on his head. It was bad, really bad. I rushed up to him and hugged him real tight.
"I'm so sorry daddy." I whispered.

A second chance
chapter 1

"We practically just settled in, dad! We can't just leave like this. For once I was actually happy again since mom died! You can't do this!"  I sobbed at my father
"Now Marley, you know it's for the best. We need the money that I would be getting with the new job. We can't afford to stay and you know that. I'm really sorry but we're leaving tomorrow morning. Go pack up your stuff and get to bed." My dad calmly replied at my crying.
I know he meant well, he was just doing what was best for my little brother and I, but I really didn't want to. Ever since my house in South Dakota burnt down, I have been a mess. My mom died, and it was my fault. My little brother was almost killed with severe burns and smoke inhalation, and my dad lost his leg. I got out fine, though. Of course I did, the one who caused it all. It should've been me instead of my family. It was all my fault.
I headed upstairs and started packing up my stuff. So many memories of my new friends that I made this year swept through my mind. The time July and I almost drowned during high tide in our vacation in California, when Matt and I kissed under the mistletoe. I would especially miss my huge crush Matt the most, I really think I love him. I kept packing through the silent tears that were sliding down my face. I guess I would just have to deal with it and move on.
"Dad, I'm read-" I said while climbing down the steps. I looked up to see my dad lying on the ground, passed out.
