Discovering Destiny
Introduction

“Do you believe in destiny?” I asked.
“I don’t know, Aislinn.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“What if we’re not meant to be? What if fate has something more in store for us?”
“I don’t care about fate, Ace. All I care about is you and me: right now, in this moment.”
I didn’t realize it then, but I was right. Fate did have something more in store for us. For Will. For me.
I guess we just weren’t meant to be.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aislinn Bloom and William Henderson had the kind of relationship that every teenager wanted. They were best friends, always there for each other, never fought; compatible in every way, happy, and most importantly, they were in love. The perfect, cliché high school relationship.
But that all changed when tragedy struck and Will was killed.
Seven months later, it’s Aislinn’s last summer before college and she still hasn’t moved on. Her view on destiny is shot and she doesn’t know where to go from there. She isn’t even sure she believes in destiny anymore.
Then Aislinn meets Ryan, her total opposite. Despite their differences, Aislinn can’t help but feel drawn to him. But will Aislinn’s past get in the way of anything happening?
Will Aislinn ever move on? Will she find out what her real destiny is?

Deadly Games
~Chapter Nineteen~
I remember looking up at David, his eyes wide with horror.
I remember not understanding why he was scared.
“Della,” David gasped, his mouth open.
I tried to speak out, ask him what was wrong, but I couldn’t.
My voice was gone.
David’s arms started to shake with me in them as he stared at me with the same wide eyes.
David wasn’t staring into my eyes as he usually would do. I followed his eyes down to my side.
Staining my shirt was a giant red blot.
There was a ringing in my ear.
I felt myself collapse.
“Della!” David yelped as I hit the concrete hard. I didn’t feel a thing.
An intense pain in my side began to travel through my entire being, tingling my toes and fingertips.
I looked up at David’s familiar green eyes.
“Please, Del. Stick with me,” he pleaded, his eyes clouding over, his hand shaking mine.
I heard a commotion behind me, I assumed my neighbors had come out at the sound of the shot.
“I’ll call 9-1-1!” I heard a man call out to us.
“You hear that, Del? You’re going to get help. You’re going to be okay,” his mouth smiled but his eyes remained stricken. “You’ve got to be okay.” I heard not only David’s voice, but also Trey’s.
Every word he had ever said to me replayed painfully slow.
My memory of his wicked smile as he mouthed ‘See you tonight’ was bright and vivid.
It clicked.
“Trey,” I rasped to David.
“What, baby?” David asked, his voice urgent.
“Trey did this,” I said, my voice faint.
I saw his eyes gain understanding as his face twisted into a pained look. He nodded slowly.
In the back of my mind, I heard myself saying over and over again ‘I told you so’.
I should have listened.
I should have known.
I should have ran the day I met the player.
I should have known I couldn’t compete.
I should have known I couldn’t win.
I should have known I would lose.
Those were deadly games I was playing. No one wins in deadly games.
“Della, don’t close your eyes,” David said, his voice urgent. “Please, baby, stick with me.”
I hadn’t realized I had my eyes closed, it felt so sweet.
It felt easy, just like sleep.
I felt the pain draining away.
I felt myself slipping.
My mind travelled to Ms. Mary and the very first day I had walked into the store. I was bored, just aimlessly wandering the city, looking for something to do. I noticed the old-fashioned shop window, it looked like something out of a movie. I walked in, intrigued.
A little old lady was sitting behind the counter, her eyes clouded over, her pain hidden by a well-practiced smile.
I thought of David and his sweet-self. His bright green eyes and his crooked smile. I thought of the way I felt with him. The love I felt for him.
Death was sweet.
I heard sirens ring from far off.
I wasn’t worried about that now.
In a distant voice, I heard David’s last line to me, “I love you, Della. I always will.” His grass-green eyes entered my memory as I felt myself smiling. “I will never forget you.”
The touch of his hand slipped away from my fingertips as an incredible light shone in front of me.
A beautiful, blond haired girl with clear blue eyes stood in front of me, her hand out-stretched to me. Her smile rang out familiarly to me, a smile I had seen every day I walked into the bookstore.
Every doubt was erased from my mind as my hand touched hers.
Every trace of pain was gone.
I was gone.

THE END.

Deadly Games
~Chapter Eighteen~
“I had a baby girl, you know.” Ms. Mary said, her eyes smiling with pride.
“You did?” I asked. I had assumed she had just had a birth-complication. “Oh yes,” Ms. Mary replied, her voice far off. “She was so beautiful. Clear, light blue eyes with thick black lashes, wavy blond locks, and small pouty lips. I named her Serena, after Kenny’s great grandmother. He was so proud of me for naming our daughter after her.”
I looked to the side of Ms. Mary, at an old, yellowed photograph of a beautiful young girl that had been around forever. I had just assumed that it was a sample photograph of no importance. I never would have guessed that it was her daughter.
“Actually, she looked just like you,” Ms. Mary smiled slightly, her eyes beginning to sadden again.
“Looked? What happened to her?” I asked quietly, the curiosity taking control of my better judgment.
Ms. Mary smiled sadly, her eyes clouding over once again. “I had a feeling you were going to ask that. Well, one night, Kenny came home around dinner time, Serena was two now, and he had been out drinking all day. Except this time, he didn’t go out with his friends. He drank alone, which is always a very bad thing to do. He came home at about six, I was almost finished and Serena was playing with her dolls spread out on the kitchen floor. Without warning, Kenny tore into the kitchen, his eyes bloodshot and his posture slumped. He began to stumble towards us. He stepped on one of her dolls. That’s all it took. All it took to set him off.”
Her voice was shaky; I began to put the pieces together.
“I couldn’t grab her fast enough. I couldn’t bring her away from him.” Her eyes began to tear up. “He lifted her by the blond hair on her little head. I can still remember the ripping noise as the hair was ripped from her head.”
My hand involuntarily went to my own blond hair.
“She fell to the floor, an entire handful of blond waves trapped in Kenny’s strong hand. This seem to anger him. The fact that she got away from him.”
My breath began to shorten.
“I lunged for her. I swear I did. I tried to save her. I didn’t care what would come of me, she was all I cared about. He was too quick.”
I knew how the story was going to end.
“His big, steel-toed boot raised just above her precious blue eyes. I think she knew too. There was a sense of acceptance in her being. She understood Daddy was mad and she understood she was going to suffer for it, as she had time and time before. And what was most disturbing is she was okay with it all. But I think she also knew this time was different. This time she wasn’t going to wake up in my bruised arms, cuddling the pain away from her small body. This time she was going away for good. This time she would be safe and away from Daddy.”
I felt tears sliding down my face.
Ms. Mary was distant now. I don’t believe she remembered I was there. “I will never forget that sound. His strength was astonishing. He was so angry, he could crush anything he wanted, and easily killed his small daughter.”
“To be quite honest, I’m not sure what happened to me after that. I know he hurt me worse than ever but my body and mind was numb. In the morning, I had to clean up. I had to bury my little girl in the backyard so no one would find out. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do, Della.”
I was silently sobbing at this point, as Ms. Mary’s sad eyes turned to me. She let me cry for a moment, her face showing no emotion.
“You know, deary, I think that’s why I feel so attached to you. I think you’re what she would have been like with a different home life.” She smiled out at the rain. “I think she brought you to me that fine summer day.”
I should have listened to the voice inside my head, I said to myself as I finished the flashback of Ms. Mary.
But I was quickly brought back to reality with a deafening pop ringing out towards mine and David’s bodies standing, unprotected, on the dark sidewalk.
