Adam Pierce's POV

"Mom, please," I begged.

"Sweetheart, I don't know. I don't know if we can afford it. I want to, but you have to understand - " my mom began. A desperate kind of pain burned in my chest; I understood, why couldn't she?

"Dad." I said, looking toward him for help.  

"Adam, it's a lot of money. I know you want to help, but what if something goes wrong? What if we can't pay for you, then?" Dad tried to explain calmly.

I couldn't believe my parents. This was so important, and they were passing it off so simply. I wasn't asking for a new videogame, or something stupid. I was asking for them to save her life.

I needed her to live. Why was it that hard to understand? Why were they taking their time deciding when she was lying in the hospital at this very moment? Why did this have to happen to my Sophia?

"Dad. I have time. She doesn't. Don't you understand? She's at the hopital, counting her breaths, right now. Dad, she can't - " I broke off, unable to say the word die. I took a deep breath, and brushed away the tears forming at the edges of my eyes.

"Okay," Mom breathed, "Let's go."
